The charger is the easy part.

An EV charger is a large, sustained load added to an installation that was designed before it existed. Whether your supply can carry it, whether your board can accommodate it, how it should be protected and how several of them should share a connection are the questions that decide whether the installation is straightforward or not.

    Where solar or storage is present, configuring charging to draw from it rather than from the grid where possible.

    Fault-finding and service for the charger and the circuit behind it.

These are the questions we work through with you. They are also the questions worth putting to anyone else you are speaking to.

  • Your existing supply is the real constraint

    A charger draws its rated load for hours at a time. Whether that fits alongside your existing demand is the first question, and sometimes the answer involves the supply rather than the charger.

  • Shared parking needs load management, not more capacity

    Ten chargers rarely need ten times the capacity. Dynamic load sharing lets a building support far more points than its connection would otherwise allow.

  • EV circuits have their own protection requirements

    The DC leakage an on-board charger can produce is not covered by ordinary residual-current protection. This is a specification detail with a safety consequence.

Questions we get asked.

Can I charge an EV from a normal socket?

You can, slowly, and it is not a good long-term arrangement. A general-purpose socket and its circuit were not designed for a load drawn continuously for hours, and the protection on that circuit is not what an EV circuit should have.

Can our apartment building support chargers for several residents?

Usually, with load management. The assessment establishes what the building’s connection can support and how many points can share it, and the metering arrangement is a separate decision the association needs to make.
